How May I Help You?
I recently took a personality quiz which I was hoping would provide me with life-changing insight. Not surprisingly, it confirmed everything I already knew. I had similar scores in all categories. Yep, solid average, my friends. I can hear my mom already, "You're good at a lot of things, just not the best at one thing." OR "You should feel happy to be such a well-rounded person."
Well, there was one type that was slightly higher than the rest. The personality type called, "The Helper". (Sigh.....) Not anything fancy like "The Leader" or "Achiever". I'm a helper. How does my skill look if I were to take my time machine back to an ancient civilization? Would I be a berry picker, the person who gathered wood, built huts, or took care of the children? And what does a helper type look like in this age?
Today, I decided to be the ultimate helper as my "Act of Kindness". When few parents volunteered, I stepped up and worked the concession stand at my son's football game. I was only required to work 45 minutes but I agreed to stay for 2 shifts. (Talk about a helper!!) I greeted each and every customer with a smile, enthusiastically described products and offered alternatives. While I was on a roll, I renamed the popsicles "Today's Special Value", took mental notes for possible menu improvements, and made sure the counters were spic and span.
It was a delight! I met all kinds of interesting folks and young people laughed at my jokes. I actually stayed a little longer to help restock and clean a little more. (Plus, Dixie the stand manager was a neat lady.)
It seems that being a helper is kind of awesome. I rocked that stand today and I might volunteer next week too. Who am I kidding? I'm totally there!
PS I have 33 days left until I turn 40!
