I've tried out many careers in my almost 40 years. Here's just a few:
- Sold makeup for Clinique and Lancome to get me through college
- Worked as an instructor for an after-school girls program
- Sold newspapers for the Cedar Rapids Gazette
- Director of Education at Sylvan Learning Center
- Host at a crappy restaurant
- Library clerk..... one of the best jobs ever!
- Principal Financial Group cubicle dweller
- 2nd and 3rd Graders Reading teacher
- Family and Consumer Science teacher at an Alternative High School (I can thank Boston Public for the inspiration)
- Actress, talent
We picked about 1 1/2 gallons of grapes and 3 gallons of apples. Accurate measures according to the ice cream-type buckets we had. I had everything we needed to make jam and pie! All the canning supplies, jar, lids, and even this thing......
Photo taken by Ryan...obviously. This is a handy sieve made exactly for this purpose; getting the seeds out of jam and keeping the good stuff. Spaghetti sauce too. I can't believe I have this!
After all the work of destemming and cooking we ended up with 1 tiny jar of jam. AND IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!
Now the apples were a different story. They were tiny and difficult to pare even with my handy apple slicer. Yep, I have one of those too. We trimmed, cut, added sugar and spices, then whipped up a double pie crust with real butter. Ryan was impressed with my skills! I nearly put this crust together with my eyes closed. We now have 1 large and 2 small pies!!
Boom! Back in the Home Ec groove. Just like that I transported back to chopping and cutting and thinking about how I might get the kids at Scavo to love this as much as me.
While, I'm not teaching any more. I DO feel a strong desire to share these skills with others. I LOVE this work and LOVE that I am very good at it. I guess that's my next big adventure. ;)
Kindness of the day: Ya....someone's getting a tiny pie.
