Where Did You Get That?

Where Did You Get That?

One of the most interesting things about human beings is our need to find meaning and to make connections. We spend 2 decades (at the very least) being taken care of by someone else so it's a pretty important feature.  Some animals have quills, venom, speed, or camouflage to help them survive.  We have each other. Pretty neat stuff when you look at it that way.

I'm also a firm believer that there's incredible value in the mystery of your  DNA and family lineage.  I'm certain that I came from a long line of entertainers.  Maybe not in the traditional sense, but not untrue.  My dad seemed to steal the show wherever he was, including his auctioneering days and my Grandpa had a trick pony that he'd take to fairs. As you can see, I was destined for a razzle-dazzle kind of life.

Yet, this feature to "find meaning", is perhaps the most annoying . Hear me out..... Have you ever been to a family reunion and 90% of the guests try to pinpoint "Where you got it"?  You know what I'm saying.... Other people trying to assign responsibility for another person's attributes.

Here are some examples I've heard with my own 2 ears:

Q: "Where did he get that curly hair from?"
A:  For the love of GOD, his dad has curly hair!  Don't dig any deeper!!!

Q: "She sure is stubborn and such a hard worker. I wonder where she got that? Grandpa?"
A: She doesn't like to put up with nonsense and has a strong
sense to provide for her family.

Q: "He is such a funny kid. I wonder where he got that sense of humor?
I suppose it's from me...I was such a card growing up too."
A: He watches a lot of really funny TV.

Q: "I wonder where that mean streak comes from? Clearly the other side of the family."
A: The kid has rotten friends and little guidance....OR constipated.  Who knows!!!!???

Again, I truly believe that passing along qualities is a real thing and I find myself saying the same things at times too. Yet, I know how important it is to give credit where credit is due and don't blame others for a life that isn't what you hoped for.

I've been successful because I keep trying.
I've missed opportunities because I've been afraid.
I'm a blonde because someone colors my hair.
I love nature because I grew up on farm.
I've made mistakes because I drank too much beer.

So, if you're looking for meaning, keep it simple.  You're mostly responsible for yourself. The good and the bad.  But go ahead and thank your parents for there part!  High-five mom and dad!

PS  I missed yesterday because of THIS:
There will be a second post today!
